Yeah, any boutique anything sounds kinda stuffy to me. In this case though, this hotel is as real, warm, friendly and inviting as it gets. Dark wood work, crown moldings, and over stuffed furniture abound and are found in the huge library, the sitting rooms and the pub. The pub has a real wood bar brought from Ireland and assembled onsite. The menu has genuine irish fare and the lunch and dinner we had was fantastic.
So what was I doing there? Well, way back in June my wife and I took a tour of Ireland with our friend Martha and 18 other people we had never met. The short version is we all became fast friends and wanted to get together again. Some of the group live right near the IL/IA border and the others are closer to home base here near Yorkville. Galena is a good spot being fairly easy for all parties to get to and this past weekend there was the added bonus of having Jon Conover playing live at Frank O'Dowd's pub right there in the Irish Cottage Hotel. Perfect!
So we all caught up, we all laughed, dined, drank a bit, and laughed some more while listening to Jon play some fine tunes that just fit the evening perfectly. The next morning we all had plans for Saturday so we continued to hang out through breakfast after which we all sadly had to head for home. But not before we all agreed that we have to continue to get together. How often does that happen? Nice.
Here are a few pics to document the night. I decided to only shoot and process photographs in black and white.
These are all very good friends and I can't wait to get together with them all again!
